Addison Elementary School

After a relaxing Winter Break, 2010 is off to an exciting start for first grade! Our students were very happy to report “snowy” weather
during calendar time this week. They enjoyed filling their writing journals with stories of snow-day adventures. Our classroom walls have
been covered with paintings, character maps, and informational writing depicting the life of Harriet Tubman. The children asked many questions
about a difficult time in our nation’s history and developed strong connections to the words courage, determination, and freedom.

Our upcoming field trip to watch the performance Freedom Train at the Fox Theatre is sure to solidify this wonderful unit. We are always happy to
share the hard work and continuous progress of our Addison Elementary first graders!

Bells Ferry Elementary School

The Bells Ferry Bandits are busy writing stories, poems, songs and books. The reason is that the school is in the midst of the Young Author's Writing Fair. Each grade level will choose one writing entry as a grade level winner. Each K-5 grade level winning entry will be forwarded on to the CCSD central office to participate in the CCSD Young Author's Fair. It is hopeful that some of the bandits' writing entries will place at the county level and be forwarded to the state level competition. Each writing entry is unique as writing itself is an art form. It is a way for students to express their feelings, their knowledge and creativity.

Best of luck to all of the participants. Write on!

KCB offers convenient and safe medication disposal

People often do not think about the importance of clean water and the huge responsibility it is to preserve and protect that resource. The largest source of pharmaceutical byproducts in our water comes from the improper disposal of unused and outdated pharmaceuticals. Medicine should not be discarded down the drain, but rather properly disposed of at designated locations.

Keep Cobb Beautiful, in partnership with Cobb Public Safety, Cobb Water, Cobb Senior Services and Kaiser Permanente, will off the first Medication Disposal Day for Cobb in February. This is an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of outdated or unused over-the-counter and prescription medications. Accepted items include: liquid and pill medications, sharps, diabetes materials, catheters and tubing. Nothing will be accepted at any senior center or by staff before or after the scheduled dropoff dates. The following locations will offer medication disposal from 9 a.m. to noon on the dates listed:

  • Saturday, Feb. 6
    Windy Hill Senior Center
    1885 Roswell St., Smyrna
  • Saturday, Feb. 13
    North Cobb Senior Center
    4100 Highway 293, Acwor

4-H plant sale taking pre-orders
Many residents support Cobb 4-H's annual plant sale to enhance their landscapes with perennials, azaleas and other plants and shrubs. With more focus on organic, pesticide-free food, there is an increased interest in growing fruits and vegetables. The sale offers a selection of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry plants that are appropriate for Cobb County. A small investment in berry bushes will provide the owner many years of fruit.

In addition to enjoying a beautiful landscape and fresh berries, plant sale purchases also support many local 4-H programs. Last year, scholarships were provided for 4-H'ers to attend summer camp and the overnight speech competition at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Transportation costs to county and state events were also subsidized. Plant sales also fund the Awards Banquet, an annual program that highlights and recognizes individual achievements and contributions to the community. 4-H was able to donate school supplies and holiday meals after last year's flood.

The organization's mission is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skill and forming attitudes to help them become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. Plant sale order forms are available at cobbextension.com or by calling 770-528-4076. Prepaid orders will be accepted until Wednesday, March 10.
