As Phase I of the Canton Road Improvement Project continues, Phase II work has begun, and a new completion date has been announced. ![]() This picture taken in late April 2010 shows markers for utlilities in Phase I of the Canton Road Improvement Plan. Utility work is one of the things cited for a delay in the completion of the project. Originally, December 2010 was set for completion of both phases of the road work, which, running north, begins at Rosedale Drive and ends just north of New Chastain and Blackwell roads. Utility changes, along with undesirable weather, were cited for early slowing in progress on the road. Cobb County DOT District 3 Engineer Scott Jordan said work outside of the travel way in Phase I is scheduled to be complete by the end of March 2011, but paving and median work will start sometime in April when the project's second phase is ready for asphalt and medians. "We're waiting on signal equipment, right now," said Jordan, referring to work in Phase I. "That is scheduled to be finished at the end of March (2011) but without the raised median and median overlay. Those will be put in when Phase II is ready for paving so we can do it all at once during weather better suited for paving. That should be started sometime in April and completed by June." Phase I parameters are from Rosedale Drive to just north of Old Piedmont Road. Jordan said Phase II, which starts at Worley Drive and runs to north of Blackwell-New Chastain roads, does not require as much preparation as the first phase because there is not as much road widening involved. That widening in Phase I includes cutting back and rebuilding a retaining wall at the corner of Canton and East Piedmont roads and other widening for additional lanes at that intersection. ![]() Work, as seen here near Worley Drive, has begun in Phase II of the Canton Road Plan. C.W. Matthews had the low bid on the project, which was approved at a January 12, 2010, meeting of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, However, unfinished acquisition of right of way kept the 1.5 mile project from proceeding, according to Jordan. Utility work for Phase I of the project began the second week of May the same year. According to Jordan, the $2.5 million project is being completed in phases so "we won't have to tear up land until we can do work in an area." While work in the project has been scheduled around peek driving times, traffic backups have been experienced when work is being performed in the improvement areas, particularly during traditional lunch hours. A raised median will be constructed from Rosedale Drive to Old Piedmont Road, and another will run in the Phase II area. In between the two areas the middle lane will be comprised of an overlay median, which allows access to the lane from any direction. |
