Davis Elementary School students entertain with poems, college fair, variance results, calendar, more...

Davis Elementary School

Poetry, cocoa and cookies! What a wonderful evening at Davis Elementary School on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Students from all grade levels read poems aloud to the school in room full of twinkle lights and lots of listeners. Some poems were borrowed, and many were originals. The poetry was accompanied with intervals of live music from student violinists and pianists. Students were not only able to practice reading fluency standards but also they enjoyed themselves fully.

Lassiter is School of Excellence
Lassiter High School is proud to announce that it has just been named a 2010 Georgia School of Excellence by the Georgia Department of Education out of approximately 1800 public schools. This is especially exciting news as only two high schools in the state of Georgia were

recognized. This recognition was based on Lassiter’s 2010 Georgia High School Graduation Test scores which were in the top ten percent of schools in Georgia as measured by assessments in reading and mathematics. For more details, please visit the Cobb County School District Website at http://www.cobbk12.org/ and The Georgia Department of Education Website at http://www.gadoe.org/.

Piedmont Church

Self Sufficiency

By Piedmont Church Community Pastor Steve Crowley

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!” John 15:5-7 (NLT)
Oh how easy it is to fall into the trap of self-sufficiency! We see something that needs to be done and instinctively we jump in and do it without hesitation or thought.  Yet when we do not abide in Christ what we do through self-sufficiency does not bear fruit. Think about that for a moment…How many times has self sufficiency produced hollow and empty results, “I achieved yet what did I achieve?”
Prior to becoming a Christian, I was the poster child for self-sufficiency. My motto was if I was going to find what I sought I had to take ownership of my success and happiness myself. Funny thing about self-sufficiency is that once you achieve what you seek there is emptiness in having achieved it. No matter how much success I achieved, promotions, increased responsibilities, or more money nothing seemed to deliver what I thought would be the results of my achievements.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:13, 19 (ESV)

Recognize the warning signs of self-sufficiency, believing you are in charge, believing that if you alone have to do what needs to be done, believing you don’t need anybody. See a trend? Self-sufficiency leads to believing in no one but you and depending upon no one but yourself. In other words, EGO = Edging God Out.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)
Abiding in our Lord and Savior is the most liberating feeling you can have, “try it you’ll like it”
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

McCleskey/Northeast Cobb YMCA

McCleskey-East Cobb & Northeast Cobb YMCA launches Partner with Youth Annual Support Campaign

The McCleskey-East Cobb and Northeast Cobb YMCA is launching its Partner with Youth Annual Campaign to financially support individuals and families in need, so that they can participate in YMCA programs and services. Funds raised directly support the Y’s cause of strengthening communities by nurturing the potential of every youth and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

Providing financial support is critical to the Y’s goal of ensuring that everyone has access to programs and services that support their individual health and well-being.

“At the YMCAs in East Cobb, we count on the generosity of our donors and volunteers to make a meaningful impact on our community,” said Becky Shipley, Executive Director, YMCAs of East Cobb. “We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.”

Gifts to the YMCA make a direct impact to the community. Last year, financial support made it possible for 2,996 young athletes learn the value of team building, self esteem and good sportsmanship by playing soccer at the Y.  Partner with Youth support provides over 5,000 East Cobb families the ability to reconnect and grow together.

The Partner with Youth campaign kicked off Feb. 7 with a My ‘Y’ week celebration the week of Feb. 14.  Members of the community are invited to visit the Y and see the difference a Y makes in your neighborhood.  Free passes can be printed by visiting www.ymcapass.org.

Friends of Mabry Park

Mabry Park is 26 acres in northeast Cobb, near the corner of Sandy Plains Road and Wesley Chapel Road, that was purchased as part of the parks bond. The land has been untouched by development, but the county's fiscally-responsible practices during this economic time have left no current budget to build out the park for public use.

Friends of Mabry Park is a nonprofit, volunteer group that works with the local community, public officials and experts to support development of the park. The organization welcomes financial support and volunteers to work on events designed to raise funds and increase awareness for one of the only passive parks in the area.

For more information, visit mabrypark.org.
